BlackBerry released the PlayBook tablet in May of 2011. Although the tablet showed a lot of promise, it failed to capture the tablet market. In fact, it turned out to be a failure. With that said, is the Canadian phone maker planning to launch a successor? BlackBerry is considering releasing a follow-up to the PlayBook, but there are no concrete plans as of yet.
In an interview with Pocket-lint at MWC 2014, Francois Mahieu, vice president of global product management at Blackberry, said, “Would BlackBerry consider one day re-entering the tablet market? Yes. Will BlackBerry do it in the coming months? No.”
He added, “When we launched PlayBook, beyond the fact that everybody knows that PlayBook was no a huge success, everybody loved it. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a meeting one day and I show you a tablet. We have equity in that space, but we’re not ready. We need more time.”
So there is a possibility BlackBerry launches a successor to the PlayBook. However, it is highly questionable whether the PlayBook 2 or whatever the Canadian firm plans to call it can give the Apple iPad or popular Android tablets such as the Google Nexus 7 a run for their money.
